What You Should Know Before Buying Resin Wicker Furniture

Posted on

Australia has beautiful sunny summer months, and you no doubt want to spend as much time outdoors on your patio as possible to enjoy the sunshine with your family, friends, and loved ones. But to ensure that you enjoy the sunshine in maximum comfort, you have to pay careful attention to the patio furniture that you buy.

One option that you might want to consider is resin outdoor wicker furniture. Ordinary wicker furniture is made from natural fibres but resin wicker tends to be woven together from plastic materials such as polyethylene. But before you make a purchase, here are some things you should know about resin wicker patio furniture.

They are robust in strong sunlight.

The key thing to consider with any kind of outdoor furniture is how it will stand up to the natural elements. In Australia, furniture has to stand up to extreme heat and strong UV rays. A problem with regular rattan or bamboo wicker furniture is that although it looks beautiful, it's condition will deteriorate in the outdoors. Natural fibres that are exposed to sunlight can become brittle and this can cause them to crack. Their natural colour will also fade over time. With resin wicker, however, the colour will stay strong for longer and the material doesn't dry out.

They resist moisture.

Although Australia is generally sunny, you'll also want to protect your outdoor wicker furniture against occasional thunderstorms. Resin wicker is ideal because water slides right off the surface. Rattan, on the other hand, is a natural plant fibre, and this means it will absorb moisture and could warp as a result. The robust moisture resistance of resin wicker also means that it can be cleaned and scrubbed, even sprayed with a jet hose, and its quality won't be compromised. Since this material resists moisture, you won't have to worry about mould, mildew, or fungus growth either.

They're not the best for the environment.

As polyethylene is a synthetic product, its production process is not all that kind to the environment. When you also consider that this material is not recyclable, you might have to think carefully about buying resin wicker furniture if you aim to live in a green way. Polyethylene products can last up to 1000 years in the soil before they biodegrade so this is certainly not a green choice. Bamboo or rattan wicker furniture is a greener choice if this is a concern of yours.
